Highlights

The Halloween theme got everyone talking about what Halloween meant to them. Although not popular in these regions, every culture has their own version of “Halloween”, a time for commemorating those who had passed on. In Table Topics, this was a key theme in the topics chosen by Yuen Kai.

Since  there were no assignment speeches, Andrew played Game master and introduced the game “Taboo”. Members were split into two teams.  A volunteer from the team had to come to the front and was given a piece of paper with a word, which the volunteer had to described to the rest of the team. The team had to guess what the word was. Along with the word, there was a list of “Taboo” words on the piece of paper, which are closely related to the key word, and the volunteer could not mention these words.

The all ladies’ team comprising Lee Lee, Suhaida, Eng Bee (guest) and Caroline won. Better luck next time, guys!

Highlights

To commemorate the passing of a great man, today’s meeting was dedicated to remembering an iconic legend, Steve Jobs. Everyone shared their opinions and thoughts of this great inventor during the round of introduction and table topics. Many cited his famous quotes and his infamous speech delivered at Stanford University.

Ling Chee delivered her ice-breaker speech which gave us an insight on her childhood and upbringing. The speech delivery was commendable as evaluated by Chee Hoe. Her choice of descriptive words clearly displayed her enthusiasm at delivering her maiden speech. Great speech, Ling Chee – Keep it up!!

Highlights

The table topics were based on the topic of "Confidence" and was well tackled by all speaker – full of confidence, indeed!

Suhaida’s ice-breaker speech was awesome! She immediately got us hooked when she announced that she was a child prodigy. She had skipped 1 year in primary school, with excellent results in the "Penilaian Tahap Satu". She talked about the 3 important decisions that she made in her life. First, was choosing to study IT. Secondly, her decision to marry her husband and lastly, her decision to join Exact ADC. She has all the potential to be a great speaker and we wish her continued success in her Toastmasters journey.

Sadly, this meeting was also Brenda’s last, at our club. She delivered an emotional farewell speech and our club’s chartered president, Loon, convey his farewell message to her, which was delivered by VPE Andrew Ng.

It has been a while since Loon played the role of Toastmaster of the Day; and he definitely brought the house down with lots of laughter. A natural

Our newest member, Dimic Bojan, delivered his ice-breaker speech. Telling the story of his journey from Slovenia to Malaysia, he shared his many experiences and choices in life.

Highlights

A meeting of "first times" indeed! Boby and Suzie both took up roles which they had never done before. Both were at ease and played their respective
roles really well.

Andrew presented an interesting speech about the recent incidents around Malaysia, where innocent people were attacked unknowingly by the acid splasher.

For the Humorous speech category, the first contestant was Andrew Ng, with his speech titled “SMS Rip-off”. He reminded us not to be fooled by the attractive prizes offered via SMS and fall victim to such scams. Brenda Loo was next with her speech “Simply complicated”. She entertained us with her stories and experiences of her simply complicated life as a woman. Teo Soo Loon was the final contestant. He delivered a remarkably entertaining speech, titled “The 3 Lessons”, and shared his experiences of changing his physique with body building, in order to attract the opposite sex, only to realize that the right muscle was not developed – the tongue!

In the Evaluation category, test speaker, Zoe Lo (from Help University Toastmasters), delivered her speech, titled “A day when everything went wrong”. Loon was up first and he gave an entertaining evaluation, which was candid and encouraging. In Andrew’s evaluation, he supported the many good points in her speech and suggested some improvements. Brenda was the final contestant, and also delivered a reassuring evaluation of Zoe’s speech and suggested a better selection of props to use.

The meeting kicked off on time and TMD Caroline explained that there was no specific theme for the meeting. She then started by introducing the role players and invited them to explain their roles. The timer role was explained by Amir, the Ah Counter role explained by Boby and Grammarian Lee Lee introduced “speechless” as the word of the day. The GE role was played by Sivadass, from Friendship Toastmasters Club.

In her President’s opening speech, Caroline asked members to look back at what they have achieved from Toastmasters. She invited members to join forces with her, to encourage one another as members embark on their Toastmasters journey together to achieve what they aim for.

TM Edward took up the role of Table Topics Master and he had written down on slips of paper, the names of objects and items. He asked table topic speakers to pick a slip of paper and then describe their life as the object. Instead of asking speakers to volunteer, he had also prepared slips of papers with numbers written on them, whereby each number represented the position members were sitting around the room. (This was indeed a brilliant idea, as it ensured members took part in the table topics and did not shy away when asked to volunteer!)

First up, Lee Lee was asked to describe herself as a cuckoo clock. She imagined herself living in a brown box and having the same routine daily. Ai Shiang’s life as an Airbus A380 would see her flying people from all over the world. Caroline then described herself as a streetlight and all the funny things that go on around her as the days go by. Brenda’s story on her existence as an Ikea table, illustrated her life from birth in a Swedish factory till the time she ended up in an incinerator. Our new member, Vinci, was a cute little briefcase – small, but plenty to offer. Boby’s iPhone life would see him doing everything for his owner, while Amir’s stainless steel chair would play an important role in providing comfortable seating.

Exact's talk show hosts

Both speakers were natural and comfortable in front of the camera. In Loon’s and Yuen Kai’s evaluation of the assignments, they had nothing but praise for the speakers’ excellent preparations.

In the closing, some announcements were made:

• The Club’s Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest will be held on 9^th August 2011. Dinner will start at 7.30pm, while contest starts at 8.00pm. No TM meeting on the 9th August 2011.
• The next Toastmasters meeting will be held on 23^rd August 2011. Meeting will start at 12.30pm, but lunch will be served at 12noon. Members are reminded to be punctual.

The meeting adjourned at 1.50pm.

Haze-themed meeting

Despite the hazy skies, our 1st meeting for the new term kicked off with a fiery start. TME Andrew got everyone sharing comments about the haze (theme of the day) and it clearly showed that this yearly phenomenon affects most of us a great deal, especially our well-being.  Everyone shared some light moments as we heard each others’ complains about the weather.

After the intro round, Chee Yoong delivered his first project speech from the ACB manual “Communicating on television: Straight talk”. He was assisted by his floor manager cum cameraman, Brenda. As Chee Yoong’s report was recorded live, the video was then played back for the audience’s view. He narrated a fair and unbiased report on the key events of the past weekend, where thousands of Malaysians marched the streets of the city to deliver a message, meant not only for the authorities but also to the general public.

Riding along the hazy theme of the day, TTM Caroline prepared topics centralizing on the word of the day – “smoky”. Everyone had a chance to attempt the table topics and was asked to continue from the sentence picked:

1. “The atmosphere was so smoky and dirty…” – Boby spoke of his childhood where he wore masks to go to school, which was common in Indonesia during this period of time.

2. “The smoky mist had begun to rise…” – During his childhood, Edward used to think that the haze made the sky look misty like Genting Highlands; little did he realize the harm it would bring to our health.

3. “The smoky flavor of burgers…” – Amir happily recounted his dinner at McDonald’s, where he enjoyed burgers with his friends the night before.

4. “The day was dark and smoky…” – Sivadass, our guest from Friendship Toastmaster Club, said that the day was not dark and smoky when he was out and about over the weekend.

5. “The smoky air makes …” – Our guest, Dimic, shared how the smoky air was affecting our health and making everyone cough; and that we should think about prevent this from happening to our environment.

6. “The sky was covered with a layer of smoky clouds…” – Lee Lee took on a story-telling approach as she recited a nightmare of being kidnapped and bounded by some unknown force.

7. “Happy hours at smoky pubs are…” – Brenda declared that these are things of the past, as she reminisced on the days when Exact had happy hours on Fridays after work.

8. “One smoky morning…” – Loon woke up to the aroma of smoky bacon and was surprised at what he had brought home the night before, as he advised to stay away from smoky pubs.

Other role players were GE Sivadass, Table topics evaluator Andrew, Speech evaluator Yuen Kai, Grammarian Edward, Ah Counter Boby and Time Keeper Amir. The meeting adjourned at 1.45pm.

With no specific theme for today’s meeting, Toastmaster of the Day, Edward Chong, called meeting to order and initiated a round of introduction. This was followed by the President’s opening speech. Andrew, who played Grammarian, introduced the word of the day “Anxious”.

Table Topic master, Kasey Chan, had topics prepared based on idioms:

1. “A burnt child dreads fire.” Andrew cited an incident when he was a child and how he was nearly electrocuted. He did well and deserved to be named best table topic speaker for the day.

2. “When there’s a will, there’s a way.” Caroline believed in this strongly and gave her own example of getting ready for the Mount Kinabalu climb.

3. “First come, first serve.” Edward spoke of his recent experience at a western restaurant where service was poor.

4. “A penny saved, is a penny gained.” Ai Shiang believed that money is knowledge.

5. “A friend in need, is a friend indeed.” Amir gave an example of a friend he met in university who helped him through many difficult times.

6. “Between the devil and the deep sea.” Sivadass spoke of the difference between the devil and the deep sea.

7. “A man is as old as he feels.” Yuen Kai expressed the significance of mental power.

o the green mountains as he sang “Edelweiss” and to encourage us to “Climb every mountain” until you see the rainbow. The “rainbow” signifies the dreams that you have put aside. Now is the time to forgive yourself for not following the dream. Defined what you want to achieve and you must have faith in what lies ahead. Last but not least, do not try to be everyone. He ended his speech by reminding the audience “Today you will find your dream, tomorrow you fulfill your destiny to be.”
